Hollinwell has remained remarkably faithful to its original character for more than a century. Whilst every generation has left its mark, the underlying philosophy has always been one of careful stewardship rather than continual change. Our responsibility is not simply to maintain the course for today’s members, but to pass it to the next generation in even better condition than we inherited it.
That philosophy continues to guide every decision we make.
Over the past two years we have accelerated investment in the course, the greenkeeping team and the equipment needed to maintain consistently high standards. At the same time, our aim has been to preserve those qualities that have long defined golf at Hollinwell: firm playing surfaces, strategic options, natural heathland, and a course that rewards thoughtful shot-making rather than power alone.
More than fifteen years ago the membership committed itself to restoring and protecting our heathland landscape. That commitment remains at the heart of our management today. Fine grasses, sustainable agronomy and sympathetic woodland management are central to our long-term vision, allowing the course to evolve while retaining the character that makes it distinctive.
We are fortunate to work with Master Greenkeeper Gordon Irvine and Alistair Beggs from the R&A Sustainable Agronomy Services, whose advice helps ensure that improvements respect both the original design and the landscape in which it sits. Much of the work undertaken is deliberately understated. If visitors notice little more than healthier turf, stronger playing surfaces and a more natural presentation, we regard that as success.
Our landscape & our projects
Our environmental responsibilities extend well beyond golf. The 400 acres of course and surrounding heathland support an exceptional diversity of wildlife, and the Environment Agency has recognised the site’s ecological importance through its ARK designation. Protecting this landscape is inseparable from maintaining the golf course itself.
Current projects include the progressive renovation of bunkers, extensive fairway overseeding, selective tree management and continued improvements to paths and infrastructure.
We are also reviewing the long-term resilience of our water resources. Irrigation is currently supplied entirely from natural springs and on-site reservoirs, and we are exploring, with independent environmental advice, how best to safeguard the course against increasingly prolonged periods of dry weather.
Many of these projects are not intended to transform Hollinwell. Their purpose is quite the opposite: to preserve the qualities that have made the course so highly regarded for generations while ensuring it continues to thrive in the decades ahead.
As knowledgeable golfers, you will form your own impressions, and we welcome that. We simply hope that, during your visit, you see a course whose custodians are committed to respecting its heritage whilst quietly preparing it for the future.
